Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Government of India

SSC signature upload and live photo requirements (CGL 2026)

Since SSC's One-Time Registration overhaul, the Commission no longer accepts an uploaded photograph. The CGL 2026 notice (para 9.4) says the application module captures a photograph of the candidate while the form is being filled, so you do not need a pre-existing photo — you need a webcam or a phone front camera, a plain background and good light. The Constable GD 2026 notice carries the same rule.

Only the signature is uploaded as a file: a scanned signature in JPEG/JPG format between 10 KB and 20 KB, with an image dimension of about 6.0 cm wide by 2.0 cm high (para 9.6). The notice warns that blurred or miniature signatures lead to summary rejection, and SSC's 2024 signature-upload instructions say the signature should occupy at least 80% of the box.

The 20–50 KB, 3.5 × 4.5 cm photo rule that many third-party sites still quote is obsolete. This page offers a checker for the signature file only — it verifies the JPEG format and the 10–20 KB range and can compress a larger scan to fit. It cannot check how much of the box the signature fills, whether it is blurred, or whether SSC will accept it, and there is nothing to check for the live photo.

Live photo capture — nothing to upload

This portal photographs you inside the application with a webcam or phone camera, so there is no photo file to check and no photo checker on this page. What you control is the setup before you press capture — the rules in the table above. The file you do upload is covered below.

Check and fix your signature

The only file SSC asks you to upload. Para 9.6 of the CGL 2026 notice gives the format, the file-size band and a size in centimetres — no pixel dimensions.

File format
JPEG/JPG
File size
10 KB to 20 KB
Image dimension
About 6.0 cm (width) × 2.0 cm (height); no pixel size stated
Fill
Signature should occupy at least 80% of the box (2024 signature-upload instructions)
Rejection
Blurred or miniature signatures lead to summary rejection

File size and file format.
You must verify yourself
Legibility, ink colour, orientation, how much of the frame the content fills, and the paper background — the tool cannot judge these.

The checker verifies the JPEG format and the 10–20 KB range and can compress a larger scan to fit. Because the notice states the size in centimetres rather than pixels, it does not enforce dimensions — crop the scan to a wide strip of roughly 6 cm × 2 cm proportions yourself. A file under 10 KB is not padded up; rescan at a higher resolution instead.

Resize a signature to under 20 KB

Compliance note. This checks mechanical file requirements only — file size, pixel dimensions, aspect ratio and format. It does not check face coverage, background, ink colour, legibility, the number of signatures, or whether the examination or recruitment portal will accept your upload.

Step by step

  • Sign and scan

Sign at full size on plain paper and scan or photograph it flat, so the signature fills most of the frame rather than sitting small in a large blank area.

  • Crop to a wide strip

Trim to roughly 6 cm × 2 cm proportions around the signature — SSC says blurred or miniature signatures are rejected outright.

  • Check and fix the file below

Confirm it is a JPEG between 10 KB and 20 KB; the checker compresses a larger scan to fit.

  • Prepare for the live photo

Have a webcam or phone front camera ready, remove cap, mask and spectacles, and sit in good light against a plain background — the application captures the photo itself.

Frequently asked questions

What is the signature size for SSC CGL?
The CGL 2026 notice asks for a scanned signature in JPEG/JPG format between 10 KB and 20 KB, with an image dimension of about 6.0 cm wide by 2.0 cm high. It does not state a pixel size.
Do I need to upload a photo for SSC CGL 2026?
No. The notice says candidates are not required to have a pre-existing photograph — the application module captures a live photo with a webcam or phone front camera. Do not wear a cap, mask or glasses while it is taken.
Why was my SSC application rejected because of the signature?
The notice states that blurred or miniature signatures lead to summary rejection, and SSC's 2024 upload instructions say the signature should occupy at least 80% of the box. Scan a clear, full-size signature and crop tightly before uploading.
