India regular visa online photo upload requirements

The regular (sticker) Indian visa application on indianvisaonline.gov.in takes a photo upload with tighter limits than the e-Visa on the same domain: a JPEG between 10 KB and 300 KB, square, from 350×350 up to 1000×1000 pixels.

The two Indian visa uploads are easy to mix up. The e-Visa accepts up to 1 MB with no pixel range; this regular-visa upload caps at 300 KB and pins the pixel range. Uploading an e-Visa-sized file here fails on size, and a small e-Visa crop can fail the 350-pixel minimum.

The official upload guide says the photo can be cropped in the portal's own tool, so the checker below is in fix mode: it crops to a square, resizes into the 350–1000 pixel range and compresses under 300 KB. It checks file size, dimensions, aspect ratio and format only — the background and face rules on the visa instruction page are yours to confirm.

Check and fix your photo

The tool below is set to the official digital limits. Drop your photo in to check it and download a version that fits.

Set to the VSS_IMAGE.pdf limits: JPEG, 10–300 KB, square, 350–1000 px each side. Fix mode centre-crops to 1:1, outputs 1000 × 1000 px and compresses under 300 KB; a source smaller than 1000 px is enlarged and the tool says so.

Compliance note. This checks the regular-visa upload's format, file-size range, pixel range and square shape only. It does not judge head position, expression, lighting, background, or whether the Indian mission will accept your photo.

Step by step

  • Start from a front-facing photo

Use a clear, recent photo of your face. The upload guide itself states no background rule; follow the visa instruction page for pose and background.

  • Check and fix below

The checker crops to a square, fits the 350–1000 px range and compresses under 300 KB in your browser; a result under 10 KB is reported, not padded.

  • Upload in the online visa form

Use the portal's own crop tool if the framing needs adjusting, then continue the application.

Private by design. Any photo you check here is processed entirely in your browser and never uploaded. ExactPic is not affiliated with Ministry of Home Affairs / Indian Missions, Government of India and does not guarantee acceptance — always follow the official guidance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the photo size for the Indian visa online application?
A JPEG between 10 KB and 300 KB, square, at least 350 × 350 pixels and at most 1000 × 1000 pixels, according to the portal's Online Visa Photo Upload Process guide.
Is the Indian visa photo the same as the e-Visa photo?
No. The e-Visa accepts a square JPEG of 10 KB to 1 MB with no stated pixel range. The regular visa upload is 10–300 KB and 350–1000 pixels square. Prepare the file for the application you are actually filling in.
Can I crop my photo inside the Indian visa portal?
Yes. The official upload guide says the photo can be cropped in the portal's upload tool. Cropping it to a square beforehand, as the checker on this page does, avoids surprises.
