A receipt is proof, not a request
An invoice asks for money. A receipt confirms it already arrived. They look similar and are routinely confused, and sending the wrong one causes real trouble: a client who receives an invoice for something they paid last week assumes you have lost track of their money, and a tenant given an invoice instead of a receipt has nothing to show anyone.
This page opens on a receipt for that reason. It says RECEIPT, numbering starts at REC-0001, and there is no due date because nothing is outstanding.
The tax line is usually the whole point
Most people asking for a receipt need it for something: an expense claim, a tax deduction, a reimbursement, a landlord's records. In nearly all of those, the number that matters is the tax — how much of what was paid was tax, and at what rate.
If your prices already include tax, set the mode to prices-already-include-tax. The tax is then extracted from the amount rather than added on top, so a £120 payment shows £100 net and £20 VAT instead of quietly becoming £144. Getting that backwards is the single most expensive mistake this kind of tool can make.
Rent, cash and anything without a card trail
Cash payments are where receipts earn their keep, because there is no bank record to fall back on. Rent, deposits, private sales, market stalls, cash-in-hand work — in each case the receipt is the only artefact, so it should carry the date, both names, what the payment was for and the amount, and it should exist before anyone needs to remember.
Number them in sequence and they become a record rather than a pile: REC-0001, REC-0002. The number increments on the page, and you can type your own scheme over it.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between a receipt and an invoice?
- An invoice requests payment; a receipt confirms payment was made. An invoice has a due date and creates a debt. A receipt records a completed transaction and settles one. If you have not been paid yet, you want an invoice.
- Does a receipt have to show tax?
- It depends on where you are and what the receipt is for, but if you charge tax you should show it — whoever files the receipt usually needs that figure, and a receipt without it often has to be reissued. Set the rate per line and it appears broken out at the bottom.
- Can I make a rent receipt with this?
- Yes. Put your name as the recipient, the tenant's as the payer, the period covered in the description — “Rent, 1–31 August 2026” — and the amount. Add the property address in the notes so the receipt identifies which tenancy it belongs to.
- Can I use it for a cash payment?
- Yes, and cash is where a receipt matters most, because there is no bank record to fall back on. Note the payment method in the notes box so the document says on its face how the money moved.
- How should I number receipts?
- In an unbroken sequence, so a gap is visible. The page starts at REC-0001 and you can type your own scheme over it — many people prefix the year, as in 2026-014. Nothing is saved between visits, so keep your own record of where you are up to.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. The PDF is built inside your browser tab and saved straight to your device. A receipt carries a payer's name and often an address, which is precisely the sort of thing that should not be sitting on someone else's server.
