Why the rotation keeps coming back
This is the part that makes people think they are doing something wrong. You open a sideways PDF, press the rotate button, everything looks fine — and the next time it opens, or the moment you email it to someone else, it is sideways again.
The reason is that most viewers treat rotation as a *view* setting rather than a change to the document. Chrome's built-in PDF viewer, most browser previews and many mobile readers turn the picture on your screen and change nothing in the file. Close the tab and the setting goes with it. The recipient never had it in the first place, because it was never in the document you sent.
Rotating a page properly means writing the orientation into the page itself, so every reader that opens the file applies it. That is what happens here: the exported PDF carries the rotation, and it looks the same on your colleague's machine as it does on yours.
Why scans come out sideways in the first place
A document scanner records the page in the direction the paper travelled, not the direction the text runs. Feed a landscape page — a spreadsheet, a certificate, a plan — through a portrait feeder and it lands rotated by ninety degrees. Nothing has gone wrong; the scanner simply has no idea which way the words face.
Phone cameras produce the opposite problem. The photo carries an orientation tag that some apps honour and others ignore, so the same file can look upright in your gallery and upside down once it becomes a PDF.
Either way the fix is the same, and it takes one pass.
One page or all of them
Mixed documents are the common case — a portrait report with two landscape appendices, or a scan where a few sheets went through the feeder the other way. Rotating everything would fix the appendices and break the report.
Select only the pages that are wrong and turn those. The rest are left exactly as they were, and nothing is re-encoded in the process: text stays selectable and images keep their resolution.
