Canada citizenship photo requirements (online)
A citizenship grant application submitted online needs one digital photo taken by a commercial photographer or studio — colour preferred, black and white accepted. The size specification is a print size: 50 mm wide by 70 mm high, with the face measuring 31–36 mm from chin to crown. The digital file must additionally be a JPG or JPEG with minimal compression, at least 420 by 540 pixels, approximately 240 KB and no more than 4 MB, and taken no more than 6 months before you submit.
The failure IRCC spends the most words on is the altered photo. Its own definition is deliberately wide: adjustments to colour, brightness, contrast or sharpness; cropping around the head and shoulders; cutting and pasting the subject against a white background; removing glare, red-eye, wrinkles or blemishes; changing hair colour or clothing colour; changing the background. The file has to be "saved directly from the camera without any changes to the original file", so a photo that was correct when the studio shot it can still be refused after someone resized or re-saved it to fit the upload.
Because of that rule the tool below never alters a citizenship photo. It is check-only: it reads the file the studio gave you and reports its file format, pixel dimensions and file size against IRCC's stated limits so you can confirm the file before you upload it. It cannot judge head height, background, lighting, expression, or whether IRCC will accept the photo, and it will not offer to resize or recompress — that would create the exact defect the rule is about.
